Orthoceras Fossil

These polished Orthoceras Fossil Box measures 4 inches in diameter and 2 inches deep.  You will receive one similar to the box in the photos.

Orthoceras was an ancient cephalopod that lived about 370 million years ago. The name means “straight horn”, referring to the characteristic long, straight, conical shell. The preserved shell is all that remains of this ancestor of our modern-day squid. Orthoceras fossils are the remains of an invertebrate, an animal that has no backbone, that belongs to the Phylum Mollusca. These straight shelled nautiloids ranged in size from less than a centimeter to more than 14 feet long.

Orthoceras fossils are found all over the world. They were plentiful in the Paleozoic oceans. Their hard shell fossilized easily so that today they are common fossils. Many of the fossils are found from an area near Erfoud, Morocco in North Africa.

The black marinace stone, often referred to as granite, is actually a meta conglomerate of rocks that were created by glacial movements with rocks broken, shaped, and stuck in mud that then underwent great pressure to create the beautiful mosaic of rocks within rock.
